Last week, a pastor near Cincinnati, Ohio, walked 46 miles in five days. His goal was to spotlight children in his area who face poverty, homelessness and foster care, and the people who help them. His name is Peter Matthews. He leads New Vision United Methodist Church and started a group called Global Village 513. Along the way he visited 25 organizations that serve kids and families. He also stayed at churches and at a school district lot where families without a home can sleep in their cars. He finished at the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati, where he met with the imam. The walk raised $7,000 toward a $20,000 goal for two local groups. One helps students who have no stable home. The other gives supplies to children in foster care. He hopes to keep the momentum going, with a new chance every three months for people in Southwest Ohio to help. As reported by Axios Cincinnati, October 27, 2026.
Walking reminded him of things many of us take for granted, like having a car. In one place there were no sidewalks, so he had to walk along the road. “Everyone can’t drive to get to the services they need,” he told Axios. Getting to the help can be the hard part. Matthews described the Islamic Center as a “United Nations,” with worshippers from many cultures and backgrounds. The Axios story ends that thought with this line: “Everyone showing up for each other still matters in these days and times.” An old verse from the prophet Micah says it in one sentence. It’s about what God asks of us:
Walk humbly. That’s the part that fits a long walk. It isn’t about being impressive. It’s about showing up, one step at a time, for the people near you.
